Activities/Amusements
Islamorada is the "Sportfishing Capital of the World." Try a deep sea
fishing charter and catch Tarpon, Marlin, Swordfish, Bonefish, Snapper
or Yellowtail, just to name a few -- or perhaps try a calmer excursion
with a Flats or Backcountry charter.
Key Largo, just 10 miles away, is known as the "Dive Capital of the
United States" however, just less than 1/2 mile from the condo is the Florida Keys Dive Center which offers wonderful scuba and snorkel
charters and is PADI certified.
Islamorada is home to the famous World Wide Sportsman, many interesting things to see here and a great place for shopping as well.
Theater of the Sea in
Islamorada is delightful. Enjoy dolphin and sea lion and parrot
shows! It promises to be informative as well as entertaining. And
just a short drive from your vacation condo is John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park,
with glass bottom boat tours, snorkeling, scuba, boat rentals, and
swimming. And one of our favorite little outings, is a visit to the
nearby Florida Keys Wild Bird Center where you can see a variety of native birds in a natural setting as well as many pelicans fly in for feeding time daily.
In addition to Theater of the Sea's swim with dolphins, there are two other nearby, Dolphin Cove and Dolphins Plus, all may require advance reservations. Wonderful for "kids" of all ages.
A nice day trip and one we recommend is the Miami Metro Zoo. We loved it and it is just a one-hour drive from the condo! Open 9:30 a.m. -5:30 p.m. daily.
A two hour drive from the condo is Miami's Seaquarium. Children will delight at the dolphin/whale show and there are MANATEES, parrots, and iquanas and turtles to see as well.
Also about 1 hour drive north of condo is Everglades National Park, Homestead, Florida. We recommend the Anhinga Trail for native bird and alligator viewing from a boardwalk during winter months and the informative pontoon trip from Flamingo. But start at the Ernest Coe Visitor Center.
For golfers, we recommend reasonable golfing at Keys Gate in nearby Homestead.
And lastly, on your drive down to Key West, you may want to stop at the Dolphin Research Center in Marathon, interesting and informative.
